This session examines feminism(s) from two different angles. Block focuses on Black communist women in the United States in the early 20th century, who were erased from discussions of feminist thought for far too long. He highlights how their published work and activism help one understand the notion of a matrix of domination emerging at the confluence of race, gender, and class exploitation. Gray examines the hostility that has arisen within the feminist and LGBTQ+ movement between those who identify as gender critical feminists and trans women and their allies. He draws on work investigating the rise of far-right religiously motivated heteropatriarchal discourses and the mobilisation of ‘gender ideology’ in an attack on progressive gender and sexual politics, showing how trans exclusionary radical feminist discourse appears to overlap dangerously with such thinking.
