Teaching Sociology on the Move

In universities, theoretical education methods practice the use of mental skills, without the involvement of the body. Practically, theoretical skills are taught through strict limitation of any body movement. The latest research on embodied learning has shown that mental abilities are actually directly connected to the way in which our bodies work and that the most abstract information is understood in direct relationship with the way our bodies work. In this presentation, we draw your attention to the results obtained following the implementation of a project financed by ERASMUS PLUS Key Action 203, called `Social Education on the Move’, SoMoveEd, coordinated by the University of Zielona Gora in Poland and carried out together with 10 partners from Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Turkey and United Kingdom of Great Britain. The project developed a methodology for teaching social studies using movement. Specifically, we will discuss various ways in which theoretical skills can be taught through the use of the body. We will review the main results of the project and think together about the ways in which movement can be used in the process of teaching social studies. The event is aimed at professors teaching social sciences at the university level.

During the presentation, participants:

1. will learn about methods of teaching social studies through movement

2. will have access to the resources, books and online courses, offered for free through the project
